Dietary Supplement: Coenzyme Q 10

Coenzyme Q 10: Why is this Dietary Supplement necessary for you?

Coenzyme Q 10 (Co Q 10) is a basic component of all cells of the body and is necessary for energy generation by the mitochondria in the cell. The mitochondria are the cell engines that make its energy. Without an adequate supply of Co Q 10, energy generation stops. Co Q 10 is an antioxidant that works in the electron chain in the mitochondria. Electrons are transferred from one site to another in the production of energy. In some rare diseases, Co Q 10 is absent or diminished. In these cases, mitochondrial or metabolic diseases, it is given as a supplement.

It may have some other uses as a supplement. People who take cholesterol lowering agents of the statin class, like Lipitor, may have low levels. The statin drugs lower cholesterol and also can lower Co Q 10 by very large amounts. In these cases, a supplement is necessary to maintain normal cell levels. Some beta blockers, propranalol and others of the beta blocker class may inhibit the synthesis of the coenzyme from its substrates. In these cases, one may need a supplement also.

Studies do show that it may be useful as a therapy for migraine headaches. A few small studies suggest an effect in the dose range of 100-300 mg orally taken each day. In other evaluations, blood pressure has been treated successfully. It can be used to lower both systolic and diastolic levels significantly.

In patients suffering a cardiac arrest, it has been shown to be useful in conjunction with body cooling. In congestive heart failure it is thought to help. Many people take it as a supplement to increase levels in the heart. The different cardiac societies and many physicians do not feel at the present time, that evidence shows that it is useful. There are many other diseases where it may be useful, but no definite medical evidence exists. People are known to take it for low sperm count, gum disease, cancer, HIV, and several muscle diseases. Again, no evidence is available to confirm this. Finally, it may slow but not prevent Alzheimer’s disease.

One can take it as a supplement but recommended doses have not been developed yet. It is found in fish like mackerel, tuna, herring, salmon and sardines. Meat and vegetable oils are also sources.

The evidence for its use is confusing, but it can be useful in some diseases but should only be taken under direction of your physician. There are interactions with some medicines and diseases that one must be aware of. It is not recommended for children or pregnant women because safety has not been established.
