Will Jackson Memorial Service replace President Obama’s Inauguration as the biggest Online Video Event on Record?
The decision to deliver Michael Jackson’s body to a memorial service in his honor, will almost certainly add pandemonium to an event that already threatens to collapse the Internet. A motorcade that began at the home of Michael Jackson’s parents reached Forest Lawn Cemetery in Los Angeles early Tuesday for a private service before proceeding to a star-studded memorial in downtown Los Angeles.
Fans with tickets for the event began arriving at the Center as early as 6:00 a.m. (9:00 a.m. ET). A computer lottery selected 17,500 tickets of those 1.6 million who registered. No estimates are available for how large the crowd may grow.
Media organizations are preparing for an enormous weight of Internet traffic from live streaming viewers after the announcement of Jackson’s death caused several sites to fail under the load. The event is expected to crush records and news sources say it may be the largest world media event in history. Major sites are expected to add servers or strip content at an attempt to maintain normal speed. According to CNN spokeswoman Jennifer Martin, it is difficult to predict whether the Jackson memorial service would replace President Obama’s inauguration as the biggest online video event on record.
The memorial service featuring Stevie Wonder, Mariah Carey, Usher, Lionel Richie, Kobe Bryant, Jennifer Hudson, John Mayer and Martin Luther King III began broadcasts at 12:00 pm ET.
