Factors That Affect Intelligence

What Are the Hidden Factors to Improve Your Intelligence?

Intelligence comes from the Latin word “intellegere” which means to understand. It can also be define as the ability to understand communication, the capacity to solve problems, to think, to be able to reason out or to give logic, to comprehend ideas and facts, and the ability to learn.

There are different types of intelligence based on Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences and these are:

  1. Logical – this area has concerns about logic, reasoning, mathematics, and number.
  2. Interpersonal – this area covers the interpersonal relationship between people.
  3. Verbal-linguistic – this area has to do with words both spoken and written terms.
  4. Naturalistic – this concerns the aspect of relating information to one’s natural environment.
  5. Intrapersonal – covers the area of oneself and self-reflection.
  6. Visual-spatial – deals with vision and spatial judgment.
  7. Musical – relates to having intelligence when it comes to music and sound.

Having reviewed all the facts about intelligence and how it concerns the different aspects of life, what are the factors that affect them? Why some people are doing well with reasoning while some are more active in sports or in music? Others tend to be very good at connecting people yet fail to connect with themselves?

Biological Factors

Studies have shown that identical twins are more likely to have the same intelligence than fraternal twins. This goes to show that since identical twins are born under one egg cell, their genetic make up is more alike than fraternal twins those have separate ovum during conception. Recent studies suggests, children of the same blood trait meaning having the same parents who are brought up together under the same roof show the same levels of intelligence than adopted children who have the same environment. This means that intelligence is likely passed down from parent to child and that environment has minimal effect on the quality of intelligence.

Environmental Factors

It is known that environment can be a stimulating force that could affect a person’s intelligence. Hence, schooling is one environmental factor that can affect a person’s intelligence. Children who attend school on a regular basis are more likely to achieve a higher rating in an IQ test than those who do not attend school or rarely go to school. Also, children who move from low-quality schools to higher ones show an increase in ratings. This shows that though genetic influence is a big factor when it comes to intelligence, school is another factor that helps to differentiate intelligence between people.

Although there has been debate over the years concerning the factors of intelligence, there comes a point that intelligence could indeed be half-earned and half-learned. Chances are people who clearly admit that they are not intelligent can still be one if they know where to find it and how to use it. It is all about making decisions – which options to choose and how to take full advantage of it.
