Are You Honest? Don’t Be

It is an old adage that honesty is the best policy. But in modern times, we see the dishonest and the unscrupulous flourishing all around us. And what is more surprising is the fact that they do not usually meet their just deserts in the end. On the other hand, the honest few among us suffer lifelong for following this outdated policy.

Therefore, there should be a blend of honesty and discretion in our day-to-day life. If our own interests are harmed, we should not try to be unduly honest. If following the straight path harms our long-term interests, we should abandon this policy for some time because it is no use suffering all through our life because of following a policy that has outlived its utility in the modern world.

Dishonest people make progress and take giant strides in the accumulation of wealth, which ordinary people cannot do, in their whole life span. Only a few of the dishonest and unscrupulous people are hauled up in a court of law for perpetrating various scams but eventually they go Scot free, thereby proving that honesty is not always the best policy in the modern times.

Truth and honesty is the first casualty in modern times. Truthful and honest people are looked down upon as simpletons who are not well versed in the ways of the world. They are invariably ignored and trampled upon as the dishonest people prosper in life. Of what use is honesty as a policy if it cannot help us survive in this ruthless world? As a bookish maxim, it may be fine. But honesty cannot get us two square meals a day. The days of the honest woodcutter, who won’t accept the golden and the silver axes offered by the Water God when his old rusted iron axe had fallen into the river, sound an anachronism in modern times. In the mad race of grab-what-you-can, the dishonest woodcutter is at an advantage because he walks away with the golden, the silver and the iron axes in the end. Honesty is, therefore, not the best policy in the modern times.

Boy it sure does seem like honesty cannot be found anywhere anymore, and the dishonest prosper with impunity. I’m still having nightmares about my last boss 17 months after I got fired from a for profit Methadone clinic here in the State of Alabama. My boss fired me suddenly one day and then reported to the unemployment agency that I’d just quit without notice (after 6 years with the company). I appealed my denial of benefits 4 times. Although this company had fired so many people that their unemployment costs were sky high, the agency ruled against me taking their word against mine every time. I was fired for making an issue out of the black mold we had in our ventilation ducts that was making staff and clients sick with bacterial pneumonia for the last 2 years I worked there. The owner didn’t want to clean the ducts because he didn’t want to spend the money. (Never mind he’s a multimillionaire who lives in the lap of luxury). The boss told us all to shut up about it or we’d be fired. Even the Safety Officer decided to shut up. He said the boss threatened to ruin his entire career if he contacted the EPA. Hanging posters, informing employees of their rights under the law, in the lunchroom, is just a farce! Later, several of us reported the mold and other health hazards in the clinic building to the EPA. We even filed Wcomplaints. The owner cleaned the vents as soon as he received notification of a pending investigation. Our Whistleblowers complaint was thrown out. The investigator couldn’t establish “beyond a reasonable doubt” that several of us were fired for making an issue about the black mold, and other numerous hazards, in our workplace. The boss, and several other upper management staff, signed statements that there had never been any mold present and that cleaning, like carpet cleaning are all professionally done. That was a bold faced lie. They fired the cleaning service and paid relatives of staff members, under the table, to clean the building. And they never used products designed to sanitize a health clinic. They swore the wall to wall carpet in all the offices were professionally cleaned once a year even though they had never been cleaned since being installed the year I was hired. When staff complained about dirty carpets and work stations, the boss told us that if we didn’t like it to clean it ourselves! But that’s not what they wrote in their sworn statements to the EPA. It was all a big joke and I was out of a job without being able to receive a penny of unemployment benefits. I guess the Safety Officer was right to keep his mouth shut because HE still has a job and a raise in pay. The rest of us were out of a job, and out of a good reference to boot, after all our years of hard work.

Lorraine Says:

HONESTY. Let me tell you what honesty got me….I made a mistake on my unemployment form, I failed to list a part time job I do, and get paid for, purely out of super stress I had been experiencing and the final blow was losing my job of 30 years. Now I have been denied benefits due to my honesty, and now have to live on my dwindling severance pay. Had I not made that phone call, I doubt anyone would have noticed little me among the thousands applying for unemployment. Stupid me.

Kathy Bakken Says:

I’ll stick with honesty, Even if it doesnt always seem to pay off. I’d much rather have my honor than to be dishonest I would suffer a great loss for something Each of us were given, that is priceless as far as I am concerned. I’m not willing to give up something Ive tried so hard to keep for almost 50 years. My Honor Is One Thing I Have That Im the only one can give away or sell

Grandma Ann Says:

Only a very sad person could be so disillusioned. I hope life gives you more than this.

H NELSON Says:

Honesty as the best policy was not meant for personal gain. I agree with you that the dishonest prosper, but only for so long and then it catches up with them. If not in this lifetime then surely the next. I also agree that men (people) of integrity are fewer and harder to find, but that doesn’t mean we should join them. I would much rather find the honorable employer, employee and circle the wagons with them. I for one do not intend to go along because everybody does it. I taught my children to stand for what is right and do the right thing no matter what, and so far they have. I guess that makes me a bad parent now days !!!!

charles Says:

It is true on earth we can get away with quite a bit. I lived my life believing that we can get away with (virtually anything) here and now, and I never thought about an eternity after death. A couple of years ago I was involved in a severe automobile accident when a drunk driver slammed into the side of my car in an intersection. I was rushed to a hospital and was worked on in an emergency room. During that time I remember the doctors saying “we are losing him.” After hearing that statement I remember going into darkness and then, after that, meeting God. He showed me how I had lived my life and “played tapes” at various points which brought back memories of my thoughts and actions. Needless to say I had been very selfish and thought during most of my life there were no consequences for actions. I saw how my dishonesty had effected and hurt others. I saw the consequences of my own and others behaviors. I saw my destiny could either be hell or heaven and God showed me short glimpses of both. After having seen the horrors of hell and the pleasures of heaven, I asked for another chance at life. Shortly thereafter the emergency room doctors were able to bring me back to life. I have completely changed my life since then and now work to do good works for God and others even though it seems that for now there are no rewards for goodness nor consequences for evil such as lying to and using others. God showed me there really are eternal consequences for the lives we live on earth.

Kismet! Although we are living in an age where the ruthless and dishonest SEEM to REIGN, and where every other person is schooled in the ways of “THE PRINCE” by Machiavelli, there is still a law that exists called KARMA! Karmatically, what you do to someone else, in essence you are doing to yourself! BECAUSE IT WILL COME BACK IN SOME FORM OR WAY!Also known as the boomerang effect. Those who cheat are also cheated. If you plant a peach tree, in the right season you will get….PEACHES and not apples! I’m not saying to close your eyes and be a fool, but when you walk straight, although difficulties, OBSTACLES and HARDSHIPS come your way, you ALWAYS come out AFLOAT; ON TOP! It’s just a matter of time! The problem with dishonesty is that a lie doesn’t have legs and more lies will have to be told to keep the original one standing. Secondly, a dishonest person needs to have a great memory! If there is an inconsistency in your story you will be found out! It’s so much easier to just tell the truth!!

old school ways should be remember and followed no mater the pressures externally brought upon oneself to conform to the status quo. Your allegence to ones own personna will get you thru the most difficult situations forced upon you by forces outside your personal realm of reality. Those unfamiliar energies are being exerted at your soul to bring you down to a level never before experienced. Following your path of choice. You are who you are already. Partly due to your own choosing and partly due to your history and enviornment. Do not let the powers that be dictate your alignment within yourself follow your heart and soul, they will bring you the rewards that you desire. VARYING FROM THIS PATH CAN ONLY END IN SELF DESTRUCTION, AS WE HAVE ALL WITNESSED THE COMING OF THE END OF CIVILIZED SOCIETY AS WE ONCE NEW IT. WE MUST STAY WITH WHAT IS RIGHT AND NOT BE FORCED TO FOLLOW THE WAYS OF EVIL DOERS. REMEMBER YOU HAVE THE ULTIMATE DECISION OF CHOICE.

its sad to say honesty is not the best policy in modern times, and its true, you have to watch everything you say especially to the medical communitee I was honest with my doctor and told her the med i was prescribed caused bad side effects What a mistake They would not give me anything after being on pain mangement for a spinal injury 3 years i was in so much pain not to mention they did not even wean me off .this was a nurse practioner who I would never go to again I could have died of a heart attack going cold turkey that way and the funny thing it was the day before thanksgiving. I even called the pain mang office several times and was ignored i cried in pain to the office staff and the nurse prac. They ignored my cries I called this abandament. This was the worst time in my life .this was also after having surgery.I feel i should have at least gotton my pain meds but i was left to suffer .after 3 weeks I finally seen my doctor and was started back on meds again The nurse pract did not know what she was doing No one should have to go though that!!!!

Unfortunately I have to agree with you! In my own life I once misrepresented the conditions of a job separation on a new job application. I was offered the job and a damn good one it was! I was to start 4 weeks later and in the interim decided to correct the record wanting to start from a position of trust. I was told it was not a deal-breaker until human resources got involved. After an extensive interogation by HR, the offer was rescinded. I was later told by a friend who works for the same company that I should have said nothing ’cause they would never have found out!

jpeek345 Says:

Be honest. However, though honesty is a value (and a values need to be tended to)- honesty itself is phasic and not basic. If it is too firm (no matter how ‘good’ it makes you feel at the time) it may be simple righteousness that you crave. Attend any group that freely offers regular interactive group talk around values. Any group that offers a Healthy facilitator as opposed to a ‘grand pooba’. Try your Yellow Pages. Try “recovery” too. :)

willy Says:

There has been a serious breakdown in our society. Many do not admit to it, others are unaware of it. Of course honesty is the best policy. Without it there is no standard to go by. There is no baseline. Without honesty it is every man for himself. People will make up stories and rules to suit them only.
People have gotten to the point now where they distrust others before even giving them a chance with trust. So we can not get anywhere under those circumstances.
Losing a job because you are honest is simply not acceptable. Bosses lying about serious problems such as mold and filth in the workplace is simply not acceptable when we all know mold id a bad thing.
When people are treated all alike regardless of performance on the job or elsewhere it is a system that does not work. Without some system and standards of honesty and work ethic it is a hopeless situation. That is why people are so digruntled and disillusioned these days. Nothing matters but for the few who are fortunate enough to be in so-called leadership positions but who abuse the responsibility that goes with it by manipulating peole and lying to cover themselves.
Use money and value people. Not the other way around. Honesty should be brought back. Make the people who are dishonest pay for being dishonest. Do not penalize good people who are doingthe right thing and who have standards for excellence.

Matt Says:

Come on people do the right thing tell the truth! Do you like being lied to or being called a liar?

Barbara Smith Says:

I was always taught By My Mom and Dad to be honest, The people That are honest can sleep at night. The other type of people May be Wealthier But They have to live with the guilt of what They have done in lying nad Cheating Thier way to the top. This will cause inner guilt That will cause deppression and all kinds of Mental Health problems . one thing to remember is You will reap what you sow and That includes Lyies and cheaters,There is no use for this kind of stuff as for thast person who couldnt get Their unemployment I would talk to someone About starting a class action siut, the other Thing is if They didnt fire you , then I dont understand Why The unemployment office didnt ask You why You couldnt get Your Job backk, because Here They do that and If you can go Back You dont get unemployment
