The commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and indeed the entire world were stunned by the news on Tuesday that a crazed gunman had entered a fitness center in Collier, PA, just outside Pittsburgh and opened fire.

It now is becoming apparent that the killing spree, which left 3 women dead and at least 10 others injured, was no random act of violence. The gunman, identified as 48 year old George Sodini, had apparently been planning his assault for months, leaving behind journals that paint a chilling picture of a cold blooded killer.

He walked into the crowded aerobics room at a branch of the LA Fitness chain about 8 p.m. on Tuesday evening, turned off the lights and police believe fired as many as 50 rounds. After killing the three women and injuring others, he turned the gun on himself. Sources told the Pittsburgh Gazette that Soldini’s girlfriend was amongst the fatalities, something that police would not confirm.

It has now been discovered that Soldini kept an online diary, in which he chronicled his hatred of women and his plans for his deadly attack.

The diary began some months ago with the opening “Why do this?? To young girls? Just read below,” He attacks a brother for bullying him and paints a picture of his mother as a controlling person. The journal continues in a venomous vein and details the fact that he had made a previous attempt to execute his plans but had “chickened out.” In fact in an entry posted on August 3^rd he seemed to describe his plans in detail. The killer posted:

August 3, 2009:

I took off today, Monday, and tomorrow to practice my routine and make sure it is well polished. I need to work out every detail, there is only one shot. Also I need to be completely immersed into something before I can be successful. I haven’t had a drink since Friday at about 2:30. Total effort needed. Tomorrow is the big day.

Unfortunately I talked to my neighbor today, who is very positive and upbeat. I need to remain focused and absorbed COMPLETELY. Last time I tried this, in January, I chickened out. Lets see how this new approach works.

Sodini was an official member of the gym where he carried out his attacks and the guns that he used were bought legally and registered in the proper manner. In previous blog entries he had wondered to himself why he had an apparent lack of success with women “I actually look good. I dress good, am clean-shaven, bathe, touch of cologne – yet 30 million women rejected me – over an 18 or 25-year period. That is how I see it”.

Detectives on the scene did find a note in the killer’s gym bag but have declined to release its contents at this time, though according to Allegheny County Police Superintendant Charles Moffatt “He did what he set out to do; I don’t think anyone could have stopped him, to be honest.”
