Well on a personal note, I was told by my OBGYN to have an abortion because i had taken medicine and had a reaction to the medicine before i knew i was pregnant. I was very young, unmarried and pregnant but knew enough that i loved this baby from the minute i was told i was pregnant. I believe the doctors exact words were" you dont know what kind of monster you are bringing into the world". Fast forward 30years and my "monster" is now a doctor as are 2 of his siblings.( i went on to marry his father and had 3 other kids). I would have destroyed a perfectly formed child with an IQ of 160. So, i guess the moral to the story is medicine is not completely accurate and we dont have the right to destroy life. I am also now in the medical profession and would never be involved in abortions in any capacity.

If the woman does this BEFORE exploring ALL prenatal testing and assessments, then, yes the male certainly can have a negative opinion! The child has half of his everything and it saddens me that this does not matter. That, while half of his DNA is growing inside another human being, he is helpless and has no legal say! I also think it's terrible that, in some states, a surrogate can keep the couples' child-- IF she "decides" the couple is not fit to have that child!!!

I don't want to set my rights as a woman back at all. Yet, I do find it terrifying that our idea of protecting these rights is to negate those of others, and let some pretty unjust things slide by. If a mother can argue that she loved her "child" before she was ever actually pregnant, or it was "a dream come true..." then why not the same benefit for a man?!

All those who hold steadfastly on the unmovable rights of the woman... I hope you don't have sons! How would you feel if your 20-something or 30-something son-- married or not--- had no say, or rather was told it wasn't his place to have a say, in the decision to terminate?! That's your grandchild!

Would you not hold a negative opinion of the mother if she terminated and then told your son her reasonings, AFTER the fact?! Could you expect YOUR child not to feel the same?!

It might be time for a "Father's Bill of Rights". After all, during Roe v Wade, they couldn't anticipate where society and technology would be in 2009! Everything should be reviewed periodically.

Finally, if it's not correct to make up for racism with "reverse racism", then it's not right to make up for women's oppression with that of man! There should be no double standards in a "fair" society!

As someone who has terminated a pregnancy due to a devastating prenatal diagnosis, I can tell you, Bridget, that "moron" is a subjective term. From the tone of your response I can tell you have never been in the position to decide the level of suffering you would find tolerable to force your child to endure. The decision is a heartwrenching one, made by many loving, financial secure couples who planned these much wanted pregnancies. You may consider yourself "pro-life", but I would consider you "pro-existence". You stand on your soapbox screaming about "murder", trying to force the children into a life of suffering, but what do you do to ensure their quality of life once they are born? Do you volunteer with the disabled? Do you assist families with children with disabilities? Do you do fund raising or lobby congress for funding for medical resources? Do you organize community resources or support for those around you? I suspect that the answer is no. So, please only return to your soapbox once you can do it with a clear conscience.

A woman might have the right to do what she feels is best for HER body; but anyone with a conscience knows that she has no moral right to kill the helpless, innocent BABY'S body, which is what happens in an abortion. Whoever wrote this is obviously morally challenged. Bridget is right: abortion is just a nicer word for murder!

It in perfect world a couple would come to such a momentous decision together, but this is not a perfect world and ultimately it is a woman’s right to do with her body what she feels is best for her.

That is the reality.

Good article. Men and Women both need read it.
