Obama: Git-less, Not Gitmo
In the late 70’s my family and I were stationed at the US Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba for two years. My daughter was born there. Looking back, it was a place of desolation compared to living in the States. The base made our own water. All our foods and goods were brought in by ship on the Seatrain. Lettuce was often brown and wilted. Fresh vegetables were unknown. One year the Christmas trees were so dried out, that the fire chief condemned them. We had a bonfire as our celebration but no trees in our quarters. Mail came by air several times a week. Mail call went out on the TV at all hours of the day or night. People rushed to their work site to get their mail. There were no McDonalds or fast food joints. Movies were outdoor theaters because the weather was so pleasant and mild all the time. The only grass on the golf course was on the putting greens that were generally covered with over ripe mangoes. You used Astor turf to lay below your ball on the rock and sand fairway so as not to damage your clubs. You made phone calls by scheduling them with the operator. There were no computers or cell phones and no communication satellites. We had one TV station—the Armed Forces Network. You saw the Super Bowl or World Series a day late. Soaps and TV shoes were 1-2 weeks late. It boasted the biggest mine field in the free world. We usually had a fatality among the Marine mine field workers every year. All together, not a pleasant place to live. We called it Git-less, not Gitmo. It’s just where the terrorists pardon me—the detainees—should remain forever.
Mr. Obama pledged to close Git-less during his office run. He made it official in January by ordering its closure. Now what? What do we do with the detainees there now? Obviously, this was not a well thought out policy decision. It has overwhelming political problems. It is totally unrealistic. This is the problem—Obama could say anything while running for office. Once elected and in sworn to protect and uphold the Constitution, Obama becomes responsible for our security and safety. He was pandering to his party supporters. The best answer says the Wall Street Journal is “Gitmo.” I agree.
No country wants them back—except Yemen. And they would most likely rehabilitate them by giving them new AK-47s, RPGs and ammo to kill more Americans. Yemen remains a hotbed of activity. We are still the target.
We can’t bring them back to the continental US. There are at least, per Mr. Gates, one hundred dedicated and guilty terrorists. The guilt of the other detainees in Git-less is less certain. The courts and a Democrat in Congress want to give those rights of US citizens. The House voted down an amendment to with hold welfare funds for them. They want to give them Federal funds for support. What is wrong with these people? These detainees are terrorists for the most part, and thus enemy combatants and thus have no rights. Did the Japanese or German POWs have similar rights of US citizens? These are enemies of the United States dedicated to our destruction and death. Leave them in Git-less, if need be, forever.
