Anxiety is a general phenomenon that filters into every individual’s life at one point in time or the other. It is usual for individuals to experience anxiety as a result of several stressful events that they go through at different times. Such stressful event could be; trauma that is associated with losing a dear one, relationship break-ups, challenges at work place, unmet needs, poor performance and so many other things.

This is one of the natural means of treating anxiety and it has proven very effective over the years. The two types of behavioral therapy are the cognitive behavioral therapy and the exposure therapy. The behavioral approach to treating anxiety focuses on the behavior and lifestyle of the individuals involved. For effectiveness, this method of anxiety treatment is conducted five to twenty sessions each week.
The cognitive behavior approach to anxiety treatment is concerned with the thoughts/cognitions and behavior. It works by determining the negative thought pattern of an anxiety disorder patient, and the pessimistic view to life/irrational beliefs that triggers anxiety; and then working on those negative thought patterns and belief to enforce a positive change.
For exposure therapy approach, the individual is exposed to a safe and controlled vicinity or environment for confrontation of the objects of fear. Such confrontation could be done imaginatively or in reality.
- Medication Approach To Anxiety Treatment
Medically, a wide range of treatment is available for treating anxiety disorders. They include antidepressants and benzodiazepines. However, it has been proven that using medication as a sole treatment option for anxiety does not work effectively except it is combined with the behavioral therapy. Besides, there are some side effects from using medication which can even escalate anxiety.
- Self-help Treatment Approach
There are also certain things that individuals can do on their own to reduce anxiety. This is especially true for people whose anxiety has not become a disorder. Such things could be reduction in the intake of caffeine, catching enough sleep and rest, maintaining an optimistic view about life issues and seeking for means of reducing stress.
